In 2015, the United Nations agreed on committing to implement the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) so that by 2030, the world will reach a state of prosperity, protection and dignity for both citizens and planet. Ecopence is committed to educating local communities about why the Sustainable Development Goals matter for each and every one of us and what it implies in our respective contexts as citizens, businesses and consumers. We understand that sustainability principles apply to all and that we must take action at all levels in order to reach the 2030 targets. Our SDG Focus

Ecopence's main focus is on SDG 12 - ensure responsible production & consumption. SDG 12 calls for action on all fronts: adoption of sustainable practices and sustainability reporting by businesses; promotion of sustainable procurement practices and rationalisation inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies by policy-makers; environmentally-aware lifestyles of consumers; development of new technologies and production and consumption methods by researchers and scientists and others. We support SDG 12 by promoting and selling earth-friendly/sustainable products & solutions; and by educating local communities on best practices to reduce waste and consume responsibly. By rewarding consumers for their choices; we can accelerate the shift in consumption habits and through incentives for responsible consumption; we aim to inspire more people to join the movement and contribute to building a better future. We have already launched a zero waste shopping method and are enticing registering users to shop in our method, we have so far moved around 560 items and registered 139 house wives to use our method. We started this effort since the end of June 2020 so on average the impact of people using our method in saving single use plastic bags, paper bags and single use packaging while shopping is in the region of: a) 69,500 single use plastic bags normally used to purchase fruit, veg, herbs and bread (based on average 1,500 per year of such bags normally consumed per household) b) 27,800 single use carrying bags normally used while shopping in general (based on average 600 per year of such bags normally consumed per household) c) 46,000 single use packaging normally used to purchase deli counter items, meat, fish & dry food items by weight (based on average 1,000 per year of such packages normally consumed per household) We aim at amplifying this massively on our official launch and shall be lining it up with a campaign in collaboration with the European Week for Waste Reduction between the 21st and 29th Nov 2020 and shall be going live in various locations and supermarkets around the islands with the aim to reach out directly to many more house wives. This falling directly in line with our focus on supporting SDG 12.

Our Impact & Contribution

• CONSUMER FOCUS Ecopence is also powered with an Eco-Friendly loyalty programme aimed at rewarding consumers for their responsible choices. Ecopence’s mission is to encourage those who choose to invest in eco friendly products and consume responsibly, as well as creating more environmental awareness on the necessity and responsibility of humans to respect, protect and preserve the natural world. While Malta is the first country where Ecopence is implementing its concept; we are rapidly expanding in other countries and through our platform, we intend to create a global change and a better future for all. => By the end of 2020, we aim to be known by all in Malta and to be recognised as a key sustainability business partner and label of trust locally. => We aim for a global Ecopence user-base and by the end of 2021, Ecopence will be be present in other countries including UK, Portugal, France, Turkey, Canada and more to be announced. This directly relates to 12.1 - Implement the 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production, all countries taking action, with developed countries taking the lead, taking into account the development and capabilities of developing countries. => By the end of 2021, we aim to grow our audience of followers on social media to 50,000 and our target is to have 75,000 registered users on the Ecopence loyalty programme. This directly relates to 12.8 By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature • BUSINESS FOCUS To date, we have developed a number of partnerships with Eco friendly businesses and we are also collaborating with standard merchants keen to support our concept; advising them with clear actions plans and solutions to make their operations more sustainable. Each standard merchant onboarded by Ecopence supports the Ecopence Rewarding system- enabling their customers to earn Ecopence points when purchasing responsibly from these outlets. => By the end of 2020; we aim to have both our merchandise and our loyalty programme available in most of Malta’s retail supermarket outlets and build partnerships with most eco-friendly businesses operating on the island to build momentum. This directly relates to 12.5 By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse In addition, all standard merchants enrolled on the Ecopence platform undergo an eco-grading exercise with recommendations on what actions and solutions to implement in order to make their operations more sustainable. => By the end of 2021, we aim to have all standard merchants enrolled committed to making changes to their supply chain on the basis of our recommendations in order to reduce waste This directly relates to 12.6 Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle We have also partnered with the NGO Green Malta to contribute to their tree projects, nature clean ups and free gardening courses to aid in Climate Change.

1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year, while almost 2 billion people go hungry or undernourished. The food sector accounts for around 22 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, largely from the conversion of forests into farmland. Globally, 2 billion people are overweight or obese. Only 3 percent of the world’s water is fresh (drinkable), and humans are using it faster than nature can replenish it. If people everywhere switched to energy efficient light bulbs, the world would save US$120 billion annually. One-fifth of the world’s final energy consumption in 2013 was from renewable sources.
